Todd Fancey Interview

I have the Todd Fancey interview finished. I'll play it on tonight's show, but you can get an early listen: Part 1 Part 2 I had a great time at the New Pornographers/Belle & Sebastian show last Saturday, and got to say hi to Todd in person. It's a good interview, and Todd says he'll talk to us again when he finishes the new album. I'm going on vacation for a couple weeks tomorrow, but I will be back in the studio on the 17th of April.

Top 30

I was just noodling around the KAOS website, and saw they had the most current CMJ charts posted. I've excerpted the music we've played here on One Chord To Another: CMJ Radio 200 Report from KAOS 03/21/06 15. Essex Green Cannibal Sea 22. Cat Power The Greatest CMJ Radio 200 "Adds" Report from KAOS 03/14/06 2. Mates Of State Bring It Back 4. Mclusky Mcluskyism While I'm solidly in the minority, with only two albums in the top 30, I have a decent standing with the "Adds". Whatever that means.

New Shows on KAOS

Just in from the offical KAOS programming minutes:

"Debuting in April: "Thirsty Thusday," a live music program hosted by Austin Potter and Ryan Williams (9 to 11pm). A&R plan on doing extended interviews with their guests--the live music will transpire in the second hour of the show. They will also air archived live material.....Ryan Williams premieres his own gig, "Gypsy Cowboy" on KAOS, Mondays at 11pm. The music set ranges from Americana and Alt Country to Bluegrass to Country Rock. (Thanks to Johnny Koch for doing his "One Chord to Another" until midnight for the last several weeks--he'll now be on from 9 to 11pm)."
So I'll be back to 2 hours next week, apparently. I'll be home in time for "The Colbert Report"!

Why couldn't I think of this 2 hours ago?

Gang of Four released a new album in 2005 called "Return The Gift". I remember that I only played it once when it was new, but I really liked it. At KAOS, some of our CD's tend to migrate. Occasionally they'll jump into other genre's shelves, or they'll visit with a programmer at home for several weeks. Mostly, though, I think they camouflage themselves with other CD's that I have no interest in. Anyway, I wanted to play it again tonight, but I couldn't remember what band it was. I thought I was thinking of Wire, but when I grabbed their CD's I knew it wasn't them. I was even looking in the right section, alphabetically, but to no avail. On the up side, I did play Holly Golightly and Robyn Hitchcock because of it. Yesterday, I interviewed Todd Fancey of, well, Fancey, and the New Pornographers. I intended to keep the interview brief, 10 minutes or so, but ended up talking for half an hour. I haven't had time since then to edit it, but I'll do my best to have it for next week's show, and I'll also post it here as well. Thanks to Todd for doing the interview. I'm looking forward to the show on Saturday. It will be the first time I've seen the New Pornographers without Neko Case. Two new albums caught my eye this week. The first was Quasi's new record, "When The Going Gets Dark", which I really enjoyed. I haven't really gotten into their last few releases, but so far this is my favorite album since "Field Studies". The second was the new Rainer Maria album, "Catastrophe Keeps Us Together". The last thing I remember from them was a live album, "Anyone In Love With You Already Knows" which I liked. It also had a DVD with it. I mentioned to the music director at the time that we should be able to check out DVD's that came with CD's to watch at home. Nothing ever came of that. This new album was somewhat disappointing, though I've only had a cursory listen. Nothing really jumped out at me. I'm starting to get into the mclusky compilation, "mcluskyism". They're one of those bands I'd heard of, but never really heard what they sounded like. Lots of the songs have profanity in them, which doesn't bother me, but apparently angers the FCC, so I have to be careful now that my show falls inside of the "Safe harbor" period prior to 10pm. I may go and try to pick up the 3-disc set, since we only have the single disk version at KAOS. Next week will be my last show before I'm on vacation for 2 weeks. While I'm gone, Austin from the show "Catch A Wave" will be sitting in. Perhaps they'll have filled the 11-1pm slot by the time I get back.

Pledge Now!

Tonight was my glorious pledge drive shift! I used to really look forward to pledge drives, since it was a chance to meet other DJ's and see how they did their shows. I've always volunteered on other evening rock shows, for solidarity if nothing else. My first pledge shift of this drive was on Thursday night from 10pm to 1am. It was the last night for "I'm Not Here To Make Friends". When I signed up for the shift, I didn't know that Patrick and Melissa were planning on moving to Seattle, and this would be their last show. It was sad that there weren't a lot of calls, but then there are usually fewer calls during pledge drive shows. I think people are intimidated. I also stayed for "Catch A Wave", a new show hosted by Austin. He sat in on my show a couple months ago, and I had him DJ for half an hour. He plays all vinyl, and lots of sixties stuff. He's also agreed to cover my show for 2 weeks while I'm on vacation. My next show is tomorrow at 10am during "Cover The Earth", I believe. I'm not very well versed in world music, so it should be interesting, especially since I'll be running on very little sleep. I was toying with the idea of biking out to Evergreen, and then to work afterwords, but it might be a bit much on six hours sleep. We'll see what the morning brings. Music-wise, the show was kind of fragmented. Having pledge breaks and other people around throws me off. I tend to get self-consious. It also means little to no air guitar. I was a bit disappointed that there wasn't a new Fancey album. I'm setting up a phone interview with Todd Fancey (Fancey, New Pornographers, Tennessee Twin), and the Music Director said there was a new album. As it turns out, it's just a reissue of his first album. According to his myspace page, he has an album out called the Magical Summer EP, but nothing too recent. I hope the interview goes better than the Of Montreal interview. I'll have to be more prepared.

So thirsty, so very thirsty...

I was lucky to make it in tonight. I came down with a horrible cold last week, starting with a sore throat during my show. It progressed into this super-cold, which I found out may have been a respiratory flu. By Wednesday night, I was totally congested with a fever and the chills. I stayed home from work Thursday and Friday, and by Saturday was beginning to feel like I was through the worst of it. It's still lingering around, but I feel much better. Tonight was my first 9pm show. I had a really busy day, and went in to the studio straight from a meeting. John Ford was there, but both he and his co-host weren't feeling well, so they aired a syndicated program. Normally, it's a live talk show. John took off early, and I had the place to myself to get ready. I finished my coffee about 8:45, and realized that was the only liquid that I had in the studio. Oops. There were two really good shows in town tonight. Laura Viers and Wet Confetti were playing on campus at Evergreen, and Nudity, DMBQ, King Cobra, and zZz were playing at the Yes Yes downtown. I would have gone to either of those shows if I hadn't been on the air. zZz are from Amsterdam (if it's the same band I'm thinking of), and I really liked their CD from last year, "The Sound Of zZz". Next Monday, Karl Blau and Calvin Johnson have a show at the Yes Yes during my show. Since when is Monday the new show night? Since I had three hours to fill, I got to listen to lots of new music. We got the new Mates Of State CD, "Bring It Back", which is their first release on Seattle's Barsuk Records. I'm looking forward to listening to the rest of the album. We also got the new Pink Mountaintops CD, "Axis Of Evol". They're playing at the Crocodile Cafe tomorrow night. I haven't listened to their first album, but I'm a big fan of Black Mountain, which share several of the same folks. Check out www.jerkwithabomb.com for more info on the Black Mountain Army. It's nice being home a bit earlier, although it'll be even better when we have another show at 11pm. Next week is the big Spring Pledge Drive show! I'll be doing some pledge drive stuff on this Thursday during "I'm Not Here To Make Friends" and "Catch A Wave", and then on Tuesday from 10am to 1pm (I think). Pledge now at www.kaosradio.org!
