I just got the official word that KAOS is back on the air. If you're out of the area, we had a huge windstorm on Friday that knocked out power to most of Western Washington. Some parts are still without power. I have a few Christmas songs picked out. Any requests?

Thanksgiving

I really don't have any thanksgiving songs. Except for "Styrofoam Plates" by Death Cab For Cutie, but I forgot about that one. Not as much new music this week. Being a college radio station, the labels don't always send us stuff when they think we're not here. Summer had a nice little stream of music, but September brought huge glut of CD's into the station. Despite the Christmas releases coming out, there's not much for November so far. Robyn Hitchcock & the Venus 3 are playing at the Crocodile this Saturday. I kind of want to go, but don't know if there are any tickets available. Mark Pickerell is playing the show with them, and it would be nice to say hi. He owned Rodeo Records in Ellensburg when I was in college over there, and I got to know him a little bit. I missed his show in Olympia earlier this year for some reason, probably work. I've also entered my official winter XTC obsession. For some reason, every winter I go on an XTC listening binge. It usually lasts till spring, so you'll all just have to bear with me. Currently, I'm listening to Oranges & Lemons, particularly the song, "Scarecrow People". It has a really great chorus. I'm hoping to get the Fuzzy Warbles Box Set for Christmas. It's really quite a good deal, 8 discs and a book for 65 dollars. It's a bit silly, since I already own all of their albums (I have 3 different versions of English Settlement), 2 box sets, and several b-sides collections. But the Fuzzy Warbles series has many of the early versions of songs, as well as unreleased demos & the like. I will be doing my show on Christmas night, but I haven't decided what I'll do. Ever since I did 3 hours of solid Christmas music on the morning show, I've tried to moderate it a bit. However, I do have lots of fond memories of all the 80's Christmas rock music. It wasn't easy to track down Bryan Adams' "Reggae Christmas".

Still Here

Sorry there was no playlist last week. Every year, KAOS is required to submit logs to BMI (one of the major music publishing companies) as part of our licensing agreement. The catch is, we have to use their logs, and include the composer of the song. This is fairly time consuming, and I didn't have much time to type things up as well. I've been looking forward to the new Robyn Hitchcock & the Venus 3 album. Peter Buck and Scott McCaughey, as well as Bill Rieflin make up the Venus 3, along with many other folks. To top it off, one of the songs, "Cause It's Love (Saint Parallelogram)", was co-written with Andy Partridge of XTC. I had read that Robyn Hitchcock and Andy Partridge were collaborating on several songs, but this is the only one that made it on the album (that I know of). Here's the blurb from the XTC site:

Andy and psychedelic Soft Boy Shaman Robyn Hitchcock have been writing and recording together recently. Robyn has been touring with members of REM and when he gets off the road he and Andys sonic experiments will re commence. Early song titles include 'Turn Me On Deadman", 'Love' 'Let Me Exist' and 'Great Wall Of Breakfast!'.

I'm also eagerly awaiting the US release of the new Sloan album, "Never Hear The End Of It." It came out in Canada last week, and I'm debating about ordering it from maplemusic.com. It appears to be a double album, and judging by the two tracks that are on their myspace page, It could be their best album since Navy Blues (at least in my opinion). I was happy to see a new album from Wet Confetti. They're from Portland, and I really liked their last album, "This Is So Illegal (Do It Fast)". The new album is "Laughing Gasping", and it sounds really good. Also, Hella has put out a new EP called "Acoustics", which is the most intense acoustic album you'll ever hear. Very nice.

Funk Pop A Roll

I enjoyed tonights show. Lots of new music, and more that I didn't get to. I'm not a big hip-hop fan, but I do like Jurassic 5, and was excited to see the new album. I played the Dave Matthews track primarily because someone else had played it, and hadn't noted any profanity. I also like the Casper & the Cookies. I believe they are playing at the Eagles on September 2nd, but unfortuanately I have a prior engagement. Also, Spain Colored Orange's EP grows on me more each week. It was weird to realize that They Might Be Giants have been around for over 20 years. I discovered them in 1989, soon after Flood was released (I still think that it's their best album). I remember having a conversation with a guy about an XTC album I had purchased. I had called it "old", and he question whether there was such a thing as an old XTC album. It was 1999 and the album in question came out in 1979. Apparently, now I'm old as well. Speaking of old and XTC, I've started another blog called Funk Pop A Roll (natch). It's an album by album inventory of my music library. Basically I write a brief (or not so brief), recap of the album: what I like, where I got it, and why. I'm going through every single piece of recorded music, without skiping anything. I'm starting with my CD's, then the vinyl, then the CDR's and then the cassettes. After that, I may go to the digital files, if I'm not bored/insane/senile by that point.

Everything Old is New Again

Lots of good stuff this week. The New York Dolls new album is out. You can definately tell that they're older, but sounds like some good songs on the album. I haven't listened to all of it yet. Also, the new Radio Birdman is great! They are playing September 1st at El Corazon in Seattle. You almost can't tell that there's been a 25 year gap since the last record. Check out their Sub Pop greatest hits compilation for their old stuff. I'm also enjoying the Spain Colored Orange EP. Each track has a different feel. I'm curious to hear a full-length from them. I also really like The Proper Nouns, but I don't know much about them. The biggest excitement of the week was finding another Yo La Tengo song from their forthcoming album, I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass. They are also going to play in Seattle at the Showbox in October. I will be at that show. I will have an interview if I can swing it.

The Neats

I found this album by accident. I just watched "New York Doll" the night before, and wanted to play something on the show. No luck, but the album cover jumped out at me, and I saw that it was on the Ace Of Hearts label, which early Mission of Burma was released on as well. Here's what their AMG entry says:

Formed in 1979, the Neats were one of the great enigmas in Boston's fertile 1980s club scene. During these years, one did not have to look far for a bill that might include any combination of the roots-rocking Del Fuegos, the Nuggets garage rock-worshipping Lyres, and the drunken hardcore punk slamming of Gang Green. The Neats were yet another item altogether; a decidedly collegiate group of clean-cut, straight-faced brooding guys who played evocative and melancholy music that encompassed the pre-psychedelic1960s-era folk-rock of the Seekers, Baroque pop of the Left Banke and the Zombies, and the bluesy moods of the early Rolling Stones and Them. Their closest contemporary American cousins were bands like the Feelies, Dream Syndicate, and the band they often shared a national bill with, early R.E.M. They also had a kinship with New Zealand pop outfits like the Clean and even British groups like Echo and the Bunnymen -- though without the high level of romantic drama of the latter; the drama of the Neats was manifested in a more introspective and subdued manner. Like those bands, on their first EP, The Monkey's Head in the Corner of the Room (1982), and debut LP, Neats (1983), the Neats favored clean guitar swaths, ebbing and flowing washes of strummed rhythms, and single-note melody lines over traditional improvised soloing. Always there was a melancholy sort of punk rock edge shadowing the music, a feel and sound that somehow links to a Boston tradition that can be traced through such bands as Mission of Burma to Galaxy 500 and beyond. -Bill Janovitz - All Music Guide

Happy Anniversary (To Me)

Tonight is my official 5th anniversary show! As it happens, it's even on the same day. I started in 2001 at the 1-3am time slot Tuesday nights/Wednesday mornings. I was there for about 2 years, when I changed shifts to the Monday morning Breakfast special. I liked being on earlier, with more listeners, but I didn't particularly like getting up at 4:30am. I returned to the nights about 9 months later when the 11 to 1am Monday slot opened up, then recently moved up to 9pm. Perspective

I really enjoyed tonights show. From the beginning up to the community billboard, I thought it went really well. I've been spending more time in the library before the show, and I've enjoyed rediscovering some old favorites. My 5 year anniversary on KAOS is officially the July 3 show, and it's surprising how some CD's that still seem new to me are 2 or 3 years old. You may have noticed that I've started listing the year with the rest of the song info. I always find it interesting how music that's 10 or 20 years old will still sound current. When I was 10 or 11, I remember thinking how dated 70's music sounded (I was born in '76). By the late 80's/early 90's when I started really getting into music, there was already a new-wave nostalgia period going on; the 70's seemed impossibly old, nevermind the '60's. Now "Nevermind" is 15 years old. When I was 10, "Saturday Night Fever" was only 9 years old. In any event, there's still lots of new stuff I like. Camera Obscura's new album is my favorite of theirs yet. I also really liked the Emergency's new album, "Can You Dig It?". I'm also really intrigued by this band called Foma, and their album "Phobos". It's appears to be a concept album about one of Mars' moons (you guess which one). I was also happy I rememberd the Coach & Four's song "Girl Arms". I played it about 3 months ago, but I thought it would go really well with the Jesus & Mary Chain song "Come On" that I wanted to play. I could hear it in my head, but couldn't think of what it was until about 2 minutes before I played it.

So last night was the 'S' show. It was a spontaneous theme that my wife came up with, when I asked her what I should play. S is a fairly safe letter, since there's quite a bit of those bands. The Hits Keep Coming

I've been thinking about the way I put my shows together. Generally, before I head to the studio, I pick out 5 or 6 albums from home (often what I've been listening to in the past week) to bring in for the show. Sometimes this sets the tone for the program, but more often than not, it becomes bail-out material when I can't find anything else. I started DJing in college at KCAT in Ellensburg, WA. We were only broadcasting on the cable system at the time, and I believe my entire training lasted about 20 minutes. We had a fairly strict (by KAOS standards) rotation system, which only afforded the DJs about 3 or 4 picks an hour. It was cool, as we had good music directors - or at least ones whose taste matched up with my own. In any event, the rotation system was loosened up, and we only had to play 6 tracks of rotation an hour, and we could pick which ones. This gave me lots more time to fill, and I adopted the attitude that I wanted my show to be very immediate, and I would rarely pick out much music ahead of time. Instead, I opted to grab CDs as I went in an effort to maintain spontaneity. This was pretty easy, since I was quite familiar with the library by then. It also helped that the library was essentially the walls of the broadcast booth, and were in arms reach. After I started on KAOS, I had to start doing more planning, since we have an entire separate room for our library, and no rotation tracks to fill. I've adjusted by usually pulling about twice as many CDs as I can play in my shift. I also focus heavily on the new (past 3 months) releases. I get to hear lots of new music this way, but at the same time I tend to neglect stuff that I've played in the past. So I'm making an effort to mix up the playlists a little more. The new time slot helps, as I'm more awake, and I have a little more time to prepare. The challenge for me is to not rely too heavily on my favorites and to remember music I've been neglecting. The other tricky part is to remember that my memory of what I've played is a lot longer than the listeners.

Not much new music this week, though I'm still listening to some of the other recent releases. I rescued the Irving cd from the crypt pile this week. I must have forgotten to mark that I had played it several times, since I had only initialed it once. I also am enjoying the new Black Heart Procession album "The Spell", but I still need to listen to it all the way through. I also got the Yo La Tengo album, "Yo La Tengo Is Murdering the Classics." I ordered the CD off of their website and I really like it. It's a collections of cover songs they performed on WFMU for people who pledged during their membership drive. Some of the songs are great, and some are hilarious. I thought the show went well, and I had a lot of fun with my rock set. That was one of those times where the songs clicked with my mood and I went with it. It seems really corny when I write that, but that's how it goes.

Gone

Two of the albums I've been really excited about are the new Flaming Lips and Built To Spill. I was happy when I got back last week and both were at the station. However, this week the Built To Spill album was missing. Hopefully it was misfiled, or set aside for another show, but it's really annoying when albums disappear from the library. The last Built To Spill album, "Ancient Melodies of the Future, " also was ripped off shortly after it came out as well. *UPDATE* - The Built To Spill turned up. Yay! -jk So far, I really like the new Fiery Furnaces album, "Bitter Tea." I've listened to their last two records, but haven't really gotten into them yet. My favorite discovery this week is a best-of collection of the Shivers called "Lost Hits." I'd never heard of them before, but apparently they're from the late 70's in Milwaukee, WI. I also like the new Don Cabellero, Quasi and Tic Code (from Portland). I'm adjusting to the new time slot. It's weird actually having people around the station while I'm DJing. I've had to cut way back on the air guitar.

Todd Fancey Interview

I have the Todd Fancey interview finished. I'll play it on tonight's show, but you can get an early listen: Part 1 Part 2 I had a great time at the New Pornographers/Belle & Sebastian show last Saturday, and got to say hi to Todd in person. It's a good interview, and Todd says he'll talk to us again when he finishes the new album. I'm going on vacation for a couple weeks tomorrow, but I will be back in the studio on the 17th of April.

New Shows on KAOS

Just in from the offical KAOS programming minutes:

"Debuting in April: "Thirsty Thusday," a live music program hosted by Austin Potter and Ryan Williams (9 to 11pm). A&R plan on doing extended interviews with their guests--the live music will transpire in the second hour of the show. They will also air archived live material.....Ryan Williams premieres his own gig, "Gypsy Cowboy" on KAOS, Mondays at 11pm. The music set ranges from Americana and Alt Country to Bluegrass to Country Rock. (Thanks to Johnny Koch for doing his "One Chord to Another" until midnight for the last several weeks--he'll now be on from 9 to 11pm)."

So I'll be back to 2 hours next week, apparently. I'll be home in time for "The Colbert Report"!

Why couldn't I think of this 2 hours ago?

Gang of Four released a new album in 2005 called "Return The Gift". I remember that I only played it once when it was new, but I really liked it. At KAOS, some of our CD's tend to migrate. Occasionally they'll jump into other genre's shelves, or they'll visit with a programmer at home for several weeks. Mostly, though, I think they camouflage themselves with other CD's that I have no interest in. Anyway, I wanted to play it again tonight, but I couldn't remember what band it was. I thought I was thinking of Wire, but when I grabbed their CD's I knew it wasn't them. I was even looking in the right section, alphabetically, but to no avail. On the up side, I did play Holly Golightly and Robyn Hitchcock because of it. Yesterday, I interviewed Todd Fancey of, well, Fancey, and the New Pornographers. I intended to keep the interview brief, 10 minutes or so, but ended up talking for half an hour. I haven't had time since then to edit it, but I'll do my best to have it for next week's show, and I'll also post it here as well. Thanks to Todd for doing the interview. I'm looking forward to the show on Saturday. It will be the first time I've seen the New Pornographers without Neko Case. Two new albums caught my eye this week. The first was Quasi's new record, "When The Going Gets Dark", which I really enjoyed. I haven't really gotten into their last few releases, but so far this is my favorite album since "Field Studies". The second was the new Rainer Maria album, "Catastrophe Keeps Us Together". The last thing I remember from them was a live album, "Anyone In Love With You Already Knows" which I liked. It also had a DVD with it. I mentioned to the music director at the time that we should be able to check out DVD's that came with CD's to watch at home. Nothing ever came of that. This new album was somewhat disappointing, though I've only had a cursory listen. Nothing really jumped out at me. I'm starting to get into the mclusky compilation, "mcluskyism". They're one of those bands I'd heard of, but never really heard what they sounded like. Lots of the songs have profanity in them, which doesn't bother me, but apparently angers the FCC, so I have to be careful now that my show falls inside of the "Safe harbor" period prior to 10pm. I may go and try to pick up the 3-disc set, since we only have the single disk version at KAOS. Next week will be my last show before I'm on vacation for 2 weeks. While I'm gone, Austin from the show "Catch A Wave" will be sitting in. Perhaps they'll have filled the 11-1pm slot by the time I get back.
